The Biography Show #005 - Ramesses II
He ruled for 66 years and died at the age of 90. During his reign, he re-built Egypt into it’s former glory. He may have been the Pharaoh of the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt. He built impressive statues of himself and temples in his own honour. He had over 100 children and became a god. He was…

Enjoyable and informative as always. I had one quibble though. It seems like Mr. Riley’s volume is sometimes much lower than that of Mr. Markham. Is it possible at all to equalize them? I have difficulty in hearing Cameron without forcing David to shout.

Hi Aaron
Is my audio *still* low? Sheesh. My mic settings were too low during recording but I literally spent HOURS trying to equalize them during editing. I exported the show no less than 5 times trying to get it right. I thought, in the end, I finally had it. It certainly sounded fine in Garageband but, for some reason, when it’s exported to mp3 I lose the volume. I’ll have another go at it. Thanks for letting me know.
cheers
Cameron

Aaron - my bad. Seems I uploaded the final version of the show but forgot to link to it! I’ve now fixed that error. Sorry to everyone who got the quiet version!

What is the music you ended this episode with?
Cool variation on the original intro version ….

Thanks Cameron. It is much better now that David doesn’t appear to be talking to himself!

Another Napoleon listener here, I must say I really enjoy both shows. In the Ramesses II show you touched briefly on mummies, and how some were ground up as aphrodesiacs. Apparently it was not uncommon to find “mummy” as a rich brown artist’s pigment in the 18th & 19th centuries (obtained from, you guessed it, ground mummies). As a side note, anyone interested in mummies from all over the world should do themselves a favor and read “The Mummy Congress”, an engrossing read about mummies and the people who study them.
Anyhow, keep up the good work David and Cameron!

Hi guys,
I’ll just throw in that I am enjoying these shows, but bear in mind that they are of a different character to the Napoleon show.
With Napoleon, you have long rambling 1 hour or longer podcasts with a long commentary linking the episodes. On that it’s nice to have little diversions and distractions and chat going on. But with the Biography Show, you are making tight self contained 1/2 hour packages.
Sometimes I’ll be watching the progress bar moving along my iPod, and 15 minutes will be gone and I’ll be thinking “Come on guys, you’ve barely started the story”. And then it will turn into a chat about who Yul Brynner played in a movie.
I’m just asking for a bit more structure, a bit more of a preparation of “These are 5 important things about this person that we have to discuss”.
What I did get out of this episode is the feeling of how long the history of Egypt was and the realization that the pyramids would have been worn down ancient monuments to the Egyptians of Ramesses’ time. That was eye opening.

Greg, that’s good feedback, thanks, I’ll take it on board.

Hi, Greg,
I completely agree with your comments. But please understand that it is not always easy to change the nature of our discussion, even given the change in format. But as we progress, hopefully we will ‘get the hang of it’ better. Meanwhile, I hope you keep listening!

Hi, great show. I am totally addicted to this and The Napoleon Show. :)
Have you guys considered doing anything on Tokugawa Ieyasu or anyone around the battle of Sekigahara(spelling?) Would love to hear your take on it.

Hi Guys
just letting you know that i’m enjoying the show. Being a Nap 101 fanatic I found it a bit hard at first to hear you talking about somebody else (almost felt like we were cheating on Napoleon) but i’m into it now and appreciate the new format.
I must admit I enjoy the marathon 101 shows (90 mins plus and I’m in heavan) but this new tight format works just as well. Still full of the trademark off-shoots and Camerons controversial statements (love it) but with only a teasing ammount of information to get most of us rushing to the bookshop or Wikipedia.
Keep it up
